How to organize and properly store your negatives

Some tips to help you store your negatives...

First of all, you'll need to keep your negatives safe from moisture and damage. The sleeves provided by the photo developers are sometimes non Acid-free so choose either archival (non-acid) boxes or polypropylene (not vinyl) ring binder pages. Non-archival paper boxes leak acidic vapours, and vinyl pages leak volatile agents that can make the film emulsion stick to the negatives. Ring binder pages can be stored either in binders or in hanging files.

There are 2 methods for organizing negatives : either by subject or by chronology. Label the boxes and sleeves with a felt pen. This simple procedure will keep your negatives protected as well as organized. Store your negatives in a warm, dry place, and keep your negatives and prints in separate boxes / albums and places.
