How to frame one's favourite pictures

Here are some tips for having your best photographs framed...

Photographs are easily torn, folded and smudged and should therefore be framed for a long-term display. Choosing appropriate Mat board, glazing and backboard will help to protect and preserve your favourite photographs.

Why should you frame your photographs:

support for optimum viewing of the picture: it keeps the image flat and permits to be easily placed upright on a wall or other support at a suitable viewing height.

protection: quality photographs need to be protected from dirt, light, moisture and contact with materials with high-acid content.

aesthetics: framing will draw the eye to your picture, emphasizing the most subtle elements and colours, and enhance its visual appeal.

Photographs may be not completely flat. They may be uneven and all the little ripples and waves in the print may reflect light differently, which is very distracting to the eye. The first step is therefore hunging your photos by a piece of tape to the backboard.

It is not good to frame a picture using no mat. There may be a small space between the photograph and the glass. Have your photos matted with chemically stable (Acid-free) cardboard.
